How to Sell Products on Google

One of the biggest tasks for online sellers is getting their products discovered by customers so that they can continue to grow. But potential customers don’t always have time to compare products retailer by retailer while online shopping.

In addition to social media marketing and search engine optimization (SEO) on your website, a key way to increase your visibility—and sales—online is making your products shoppable on search engines like Google. Squarespace’s integration with Google Shopping, allows you to sync your Squarespace product information so that your catalog shows up across Google channels like Google search, the Shopping tab, Image search, and on YouTube.

By connecting your store to Google Merchant Center, you can still manage your products and brand from your Squarespace dashboard while increasing appearances in search, visits to your website, and conversions. Follow these five steps to get started.

1. Set up your Squarespace Commerce store

Before you can sync your products with Google, you need to be an U.S.-based Squarespace customer with an online store and physical products for sale on your Squarespace website. You also need to have a shipping option set up for your store.

If you don’t have a website for your brand yet, follow our beginner’s guides to choosing a template and setting up your website first. If you have a website, but haven’t started an ecommerce store, it just takes a few steps to get up and running.

Once you’ve set up your store and added your products, make sure you have high-quality product photos and your item descriptions are in good shape. Note that the Google Shopping integration is designed for selling physical items.

2. Sign up for Google Merchant Center

Next, create an account for your brand in Google Merchant Center. You can sign up directly with Google by filling out a form on its website. You’ll need your website’s URL and your store name. Your store name in the Merchant Center can be your brand’s name, your website’s name, or your business’ name. The name you choose is what will appear across Google, so go with something easily recognizable as your business.

You’ll also need to share a phone number and a business address to finish signing up, even if you don’t have a brick-and-mortar location. 

3. Link your Squarespace online store to Google Shopping

Once you have a Google Merchant Center account, you can connect your Squarespace store to Google with our Google Shopping integration. Simply go to your Commerce dashboard, choose “Google” from the sidebar menu, click “Google Merchant Center.” You’ll be redirected to Google’s website to sign in.

From there, you can verify your website URL and manage business listing details like your logo and contact information. To verify, you’ll need to copy an HTML tag from the Google Merchant Center, come back to Squarespace, and click “Paste Google verification code into site header.” Paste your HTML in the panel that opens and save. Then, go back to Google Merchant Center and click “Verify website” and then “Claim website.” 

In Google Merchant Center, you can also add authorized users to help manage your account, or review their support documents for additional help getting set up.

4. Sync and optimize your product listings 

The Google Shopping integration automatically syncs your Squarespace product catalog on a regular basis. Any future changes you make to your product data on Squarespace will sync to your Google Shopping feed without any extra steps needed from you. 

That means you can keep managing your products, website, and marketing with just your Squarespace dashboard, instead of managing every platform you sell on individually.

You get free listings for your products, and only pay if you use Google ad campaigns to promote any of your items.

One useful update to make before or after connecting your online shop is to add relevant keywords to your product descriptions, product names, and your photo alt text. This can help people who don’t know your brand discover your products in search. 

Think about search terms that would lead a new customer to the product, like “ceramic mug with lid” and experiment with including them in your listings. Your Squarespace Analytics panel can also help you find the keywords that drive visitors to your website.

5. Start selling on Google Shopping, Google Image search, and YouTube

Once you’ve synced your product information, there’s nothing more you need to do. Your items will start showing up in shopping results across Google. That includes the Google Shopping tab, Image search, and YouTube.

Searchers will see your main product image, the item name, price, your website name and link, and other product details like star reviews or shipping costs. Once customers click through, they’re sent to your product page for a streamlined checkout process.
